'What is architecture anyway? Is it the vast collection of the various buildings which have been built to please the varying tastes of the various lords of mankind? I think not. No, I know that architecture is life; or at least it is life itself taking form and therefore it is the truest record of life as it was lived in the world yesterday, as it is lived today or ever will be lived…So, architecture I know to be a Great Spirit.'

It should not be suggestive of a pyramid, a temple, or a palace. The object should determine the design. That is to say, the design should be altogether subordinate to the uses of the building, and should be of the kind that would express them, or at least, harmonize with them.

We must now heed the imperative voice of emotion. It demands of us, what is the chief characteristic of the tall office building? And at once we answer, it is lofty…It must be tall. The force and power of altitude must be in it, the glory and pride of exultation must be in it. It must be every inch a proud and soaring thing, rising in sheer exultation that from top to bottom it is a unit without a single dissenting line…

…the whole basis of the views of architecture prevailing today must be displaced by the recognition that the only possible point of departure for our artistic creation is modern life.

Living architecture is that which faithfully expresses its time. We shall seek it in all domains of construction. We shall choose works that, strictly subordinated to their use and realized by the judicious use of material, attain beauty by the disposition and harmonious proportions of the necessary elements of which they are made up.

The arts and crafts are called upon to restore our awareness of honesty, integrity and simplicity in contemporary society. If this can be achieved, the whole of our cultural life will be profoundly affected…The success of our movement will not only alter the appearance of houses and flats but will have direct repercussions on the character of an entire generation…If the new trends are genuine, then an original, lasting style will emerge…

We should build our house simple, plain and substantial as a boulder, then leave the ornamentation of it to Nature, who will tone it with lichens, chisel it with storms, make it gracious and friendly with vines and flower shadows as she does the stone in the meadow. I believe also that houses should be built more substantially and should be made absolutely sanitary. If the cost of unimportant ornamentation were put into construction, then we would have a more lasting and a more dignified house.

A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed and in the end must be unmeasurable.
